ASEH invites panel, roundtable, working group, paper, and poster proposals for our 2010 conference.

Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers and in the center of the dynamic Pacific Northwest, Portland is an ideal place to consider issues and ideas structured around the theme "Currents of Change." These could include evolving ideas of sustainability, the relationship of human settlement to environmental transformation, the impact of power/energy development on ecological systems, and culturally pluralistic approaches to historical issues. Proposals may address any area of environmental history, but we especially welcome submissions that illustrate or explicate the theme "Currents of Change."

In Portland, ASEH will meet together with the National Council on Public History. While many conference events will be shared, the two organizations will offer separate programs. Portland was recently named the nation's most sustainable city by The SustainLane US City Rankings, and our conference will be held in the heart of downtown, with cafes, restaurants, several historic districts, and a river trail within easy walking distance of the Hilton Hotel conference site.

The program committee prefers complete session proposals but will endeavor to construct sessions from proposals for individual presentations. Sessions will be scheduled for 1.5 hours; significant time for audience discussion should be included in every session. The committee invites proposals in formats beyond the typical paper session where presenters offer something other than verbatim recitals of written papers. Participants may give only one formal presentation at the conference, but they may also engage in roundtable, chairing, or comment duties. For instructions on submitting proposals, click here.
